Senegal: Audience with the Senegalese Minister of Health and Social Action with a view to renewing the Framework Cooperation Agreement in the field of health

Mr Abdoulaye Diouf Sarr, Senegal’s Minister of Health and Social Action, received a Monegasque delegation* in audience on 6th July 2021 to discuss areas of cooperation regarding health between the Government of the Principality of Monaco and Senegal.

Under the initiative of Mr Guédel Ndiaye, Honorary Consul of the Principality of Monaco in Senegal, this audience offered the Monegasque Cooperation an opportunity to confirm the strong ties that have existed between the Principality and Senegal for close to 20 years, particularly in the field of health. Health is a priority area of intervention for the Monegasque Cooperation and represented over one third of the Principality’s Official Development Assistance over the last three years.

The partnership between the two countries led to a Framework Sectoral Cooperation Agreement to support the national policy in the fight against sickle cell disease signed in 2014 and renewed in 2017. This partnership resulted in the implementation of concrete actions, such as the creation of an Ambulatory Care Unit for children and teenagers suffering from sickle cell disease. The unit was unveiled on 9th May 2017 in the presence of Senegalese and Monegasque authorities. As the Framework Cooperation Agreement terminates on 31st December 2020, the arrangements for its renewal as well as its potential extension to other areas of health were discussed during the audience.

In Senegal, the Monegasque Cooperation is also strongly committed to the improvement of maternal and child health, support for the health system and access to healthcare for vulnerable individuals, in addition to the fight against malaria and nutrition (support for school feeding programmes).

Special focus is placed on individuals with disabilities. The Monegasque Cooperation supports the Talibou Dabo Centre, an education and rehabilitation centre for disabled children placed under the authority of the Senegalese Ministry of Health and Social Affairs, which recently took on a volunteer as part of the Monaco International Voluntary Programme (V.I.M.).

* The Monegasque delegation was made up of Mr Guédel Ndiaye, Honorary Consul of the Principality of Monaco in Senegal, Mrs Ramatoulaye Sarr, Country Coordinator for the Monaco International Cooperation in Senegal, Mrs Laetitia Sarrazin-Vecchierini, Head of Programmes Senegal, Mrs Myriam Landau, Head of the Health Unit.
