Mali - Strengthening the entrepreneurial and professional capacity of young people in the agrosilvopastoral and crafts employment sectors in the Koulikoro Region and Bamako District

Project leader
Location Koulikoro
Duration 2016 - 2018
Intervention Area Education
Funding 210 000,00 €

Context

Faced with the challenge of access to work for young people, particularly in rural areas, the Malian authorities have implemented various measures to promote training and access to employment for young people. These include the setting up of the Agency for the Promotion of Employment for Young People and, as part of the Government's action plan for 2013-2018, the aim of creating 200,000 jobs. These measures, although helpful, are still insufficient and of limited scope, and need to be strengthened, in view of the scale of unemployment and the rate at which it is predicted to increase.

This is the context in which the Department of International Cooperation supported AJA Mali in establishing two projects offering professional training and promoting access to employment (from December 2010 to November 2015) for young people in the rural town of Baguinéda).

In addition to the construction of a training centre with a capacity of 250 places, these projects have made it possible to provide 250 young people with professional and business training and, concurrently, access to work in the agrosilvopastoral and crafts sectors, via support with the setting up of micro-enterprises.  They have highlighted the need to correct weaknesses in day-to-day management that were apparent in newly established micro-enterprises, with a view to enabling these young people to manage their activities in a profitable way.
