Context

Every year, more than 8 million children die in the world, half of them in Africa. The infant mortality rate in Africa remains higher than that of any other continent (79 per 1,000).

The Groupe Inter-académique pour le Développement (GID) has observed shortcomings and difficulties in the medical treatment of children in Africa (poor reception of children, negligence with respect to treatment protocols, inequality of treatment to manage pain).

In response to this observation, the GID, using a medical anthropology approach, is seeking to improve the quality of paediatric care in eight West African countries (Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Benin, Guinea,Togo) through the ENSPEDIA programme. The programme brings together a multidisciplinary network involving the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), three African universities and nine paediatric referral departments in West Africa.

Main objective

To improve the quality of care in paediatric and medical departments in eight West African countries (Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Benin, Guinea ,Togo).

Specific objectives

  • To analyse the interactions between nursing staff, patients and families throughout the paediatric and medical departments of the eight West African countries targeted
  • To establish audits and discussion panels throughout the paediatric and medical departments of the eight West African countries targeted
  • To train 40 nursing staff in pain management
  • To create momentum to improve care in the eight West African countries targeted
  • To reduce children’s pain and suffering throughout paediatric and medical departments in the eight West African countries targeted
  • To establish a "mother and child" research/action network in Africa
