World Refugee Day

Morocco held a week of celebrations, from 18-23 June, to mark World Refugee Day. On this occasion, the United Nations High-Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Morocco, supported since 2011 by the Government of Monaco, identified the five best entrepreneurship projects created and developed by refugees.

Supported by the Office of International Cooperation, PISERUMA is a programme carried out by UNHCR Morocco in partnership with the Moroccan Association for the Support and Promotion of Small Enterprises [Association Marocaine d’Appui à la Promotion de la Petite Entreprise, AMAPPE].

Five refugees won awards in this third edition of the competition for the best micro-project. These prizes acknowledge their efforts to contribute to the economic advancement of their host country.

More broadly speaking, as part of its refugee aid strategy, Monaco’s Department of International Cooperation supports programmes to improve the living conditions and integration of refugees in the Maghreb/Middle East, in partnership with UNHCR, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), and civil society.

Almost 80,000 refugees thus received direct support from the Government of Monaco (healthcare, food, education and employment) between 2015 and 2017.
