Monegasque International Volunteer Programme celebrates tenth anniversary

Launched in 2007 by the Department of International Cooperation, the Monegasque International Volunteer programme (VIM) has enabled numerous young people to travel to one of the countries to which Monaco provides official development assistance, to take part in an international aid mission.

To mark the programme’s tenth anniversary, the Department brought together the majority of the volunteers who have completed a mission since 2007 with some of the key partners who have hosted them and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.

The day featured a series of presentations, round tables and workshops, providing an overview of the last decade, promoting the programme and seeking to help it evolve.

In conclusion, the volunteers were unanimous in declaring their experiences to have enriched their lives, both professionally and on a human level. For some of them, it was an intercultural experience and an opportunity to give meaning to their career path by serving other people. For others, it was the starting point for a career in international development.

The aim of the VIM programme is to allow young people aged between 21 and 35 to undertake a professional placement lasting between one and three years in the international development field, within a structured and safe framework. The partners who host them benefit from expertise and skills transfer.

To date, 35 volunteers have been deployed to eight countries, primarily in Africa, in support of an international or local NGO, or a UN agency. Their missions have been varied: project coordinator, partner relations and funding manager, administrative and financial manager, social worker, activity leader, nurse, occupational therapist, etc.
